Birdwatching Ethics
Birdwatching is a rewarding activity that relies on respect for nature, wildlife, and others. To help protect the environment and ensure a positive experience for everyone, please observe the following birding ethics:
- Never disturb nesting birds or interfere with their natural behaviour.
- Respect the rights and property of private landowners at all times.
- Take out everything you bring in. Litter such as food wrappers, cigarette butts, and containers harms the environment and spoils natural areas.
- Prevent veld fires at all times and be extremely cautious with open flames or cigarettes.
- Inform a friend or family member of your plans before heading out, especially if you may be birding alone.
- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat and using adequate sun protection, particularly during hot weather.
- Ensure all birding equipment is in good working order before you set out.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and take time to fully enjoy nature.
- Birdwatching is a wonderful activity for children—encourage young birders to join you and help foster a love for nature and conservation.
- Always carry more than enough drinking water.
- Please report any new or unusual bird sightings to the office.
